Women IPL 2023 – A Great Leap Ahead

An overview of women IPL 2023

Currently known as Women’s T20 challenge is a Women IPL 2023 (Indian Premier League) tournament. Its inaugural tournament held in 2018. This tournament is characterised by a round-robin group. The teams will play by the constituent (three in number) teams, then a final.

According to BCCI announcement of March 2022, Women IPL 2023 will replace Women’s T20 challenge. They clearly stated that, from 2023, BCCI will organize Women’s T20 challenge franchise base T20 tournament for women cricketers annually. This tournament shall consist of six teams, will be at par with the men’s IPL. It will be known as Women’s IPL 2023.

Background of Women IPL 2023

BCCI came up with this concept in 2017 following Women’s cricket world cup. The tournament, after the conceptualization, for the first time was introduced in 2018, as a single match held in Mumbai. In 2019, it was expanded to three teams to introduce the new concept, a round-robin format, in place of a one-off matches which took place prior to its introduction.

However, Covid-19 has effected this game a lotCovid-19 has effected this game a lot, the events were postponed owing to the pandemic. Thereafter, the events went down the hill because of the covid situation. In March 2022, the BCCI announced plans to start a women’s IPL by 2023, with five or six teams in the inaugural edition, wherein all existing men franchise team holders will be given preference over the others.

Conclusion

All in all, the steps taken thus far are clearly reflective of the changes happening in the international arena. Increased and equitable participation of women is starting to become a norm, which in itself is indictive of true progress, in so far as the international cricket community is concerned.

These positive changes and trends are worthy of appraisal for them being of vital importance to the development of the game itself. Hence, in view of the information above, we can say that Women are competing with men’s IPL shoulder to shoulder. They are ready to make history in Women IPL 2023 .
