Green’s all-round effort & Bartlett’s four-for give Australia a 1-0 lead

Australia 232 for 2 (Smith 79*, Green 77*, Inglis 65) beat West Indies 231 (Carty 88, Chase 59, Xavier Bartlett 4-17) by eight wickets

In the first ODI at the MCG, Australia easily won by eight wickets thanks to a great performance from all-rounder Cameron Green and Xavier Bartlett on his debut.

Bartlett destroyed the West Indies’ top order on his ODI debut, finishing with 4 for 17. This is the second-best ODI debut score for Australia, behind current selector Tony Dodemaide. Green, on the other hand, took 2 for 40 and then made 77 not out in his first innings at No. 3 in ODI cricket, showing off his huge all-round skills.

A career-best 88 from Keacy Carty and 59 from Roston Chase helped Australia beat West Indies’ score of 231. Josh Inglis also made a lightning-fast 65 off of 43 balls, and Steven Smith made an understated perfect run-a-ball 79.

Xavier Bartlett’s Debut Delight

The triumph came from Bartlett’s spell. Australia’s first ODI debutants since 2016 and third since 1975, the 25-year-old Queenslander and Lance Morris opened the bowling. Bartlett’s third ODI delivery clipped Justin Greaves’ off stump with a spectacular outswinger.

His inswinger against Alick Athanaze’s front pad should have given him a second three balls later, but the umpire believed it was shaping down and Smith didn’t review it. Ball-tracking projections showed the ball hitting the leg stump top.

Xavier Bartlett

He had figures of 3 for 10 with a maiden after his opening spell. He later returned to pick up his fourth wicket with the first ball of the 48th over but could not grab a fifth as Sean Abbott finished the innings in the 49th over.

After Bartlett’s burst, West Indies slumped to 59 for 4 when Green picked up the first of his two wickets. But Carty and Chase steadied the ship with an impressive century stand.

Heartbreak for Carty

Carty deserved a century. Having passed his highest ODI score after losing Chase, he was 12 runs shy when Hayden Walsh Jr called him through for a kamikaze single to cover and Abbott produced a direct hit with Carty miles short of his ground.

It was cruel for Carty to die after playing well. Walsh wanted to be swallowed by the ground at the other end, knowing he had barbequed Carty trying to go off strike.

Carty loved Morris’s additional pace, hitting two stunning sixes over the backward square. He was brutal as Australia’s new firebrand overpitched, slamming three 140kph-plus offerings.

Australia’s chase got off to a horror start with Head falling in Matthew Forde’s opening over for just 4, after bagging a pair in the second Test in Brisbane.

Green’s Composed Knock

West Indies had no chance of repeating their Gabba heroics as Inglis’ 28-ball half-century ended the game in less than ten overs. Inglis opened for the second time in ODIs after testing positive for Covid on Thursday and hitting 10 fours and a six in a statement knock. Forde and Oshane Thomas smashed everything fractionally short, including a monster six over square leg. He also hit some incredible ground drives. He fell trying to reverse-sweep Gudakesh Motie.

But his whirlwind knock gave Green time to settle, and after a slow start, he hit Motie and Romario Shepherd for two enormous sixes.

At the opposite end, Smith’s calmness helped Green. On another day, he might have felt pressure to play higher-risk strokeplay, but the stand-in skipper was delighted to stroll to the total without accelerating. A steady century stand saw Australia home with 11.3 overs to spare after dismissing the spinners.
