Rahane became the part of CSK franchise but his place in playing 11 was still on doubt . CSK played its first match in the inaugural game of IPL 2023 against the defending champion Gujrat Titans and Rahane could not grab his place in the playing 11. Fortune turned around for Ajinkya Rahane over the night as he was included in squad against Mumbai Indians in Wankade. That was a master stroke by MSD as Rahane played Cricket in this very ground all his life as he is the local boy over there. Rahane came to the crease after Devon Convey gone on duck in the 4th ball of first over of CSK innings. CSK had to chase the target of 158 in 20 0vers. Rahane played a brilliant innings of 61 of 27 deliveries with a strike rate of 225+ .In that comeback innings Rahane smashed 7 fours and 3 sixes.
