Rahul-Jadeja Partnership Puts England on Backfoot

India 421 for 7 (Rahul 86, Jadeja 81*, Jaiswal 80, Bharat 41, Axar 35*, Root 2-77, Hartley 2-131) lead England 246 by 175 runs

India virtually eliminated England from the first Test on the second day, surpassing their 246 for a 175-run lead with three wickets left. India started the day 127 behind, lost a wicket in the first over, but maintained batting and took the lead in the 57th over. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja dominated the batting rankings with different fifties.

Aggressive Batting

England took control after five wickets. All five fell to attacking strokes, only the second time since ESPNcricinfo began ball-by-ball commentary. England attempted a declaration in Barbados in 2022.

The aggressive purpose also caused wickets to fall. Everyone but R Ashwin entered. Everyone, even Ashwin, gave his wicket away. None other than KS Bharat was bowled or caught at the wicket.

Only Yashasvi Jaiswal’s catch back at Joe Root in the opening overcame close to a plan. Root looked like the greatest spinner but was dismissed after four overs despite Rahul and Shubman Gill giving him chances. Rahul edged the first ball, Ben Foakes missed it, and the umpire called the run a bye. England were out of reviews after burning them all in 14 overs, even if Foakes caught it.

Rahul-Jadeja Dominance

This partnership between Rahul-Jadeja was on steroids, shattering any momentum England had after lunch with that early wicket. Rahul took out deep midwicket with a Hartley long hop as the partnership reached 52 in 51 balls, 14 shy of a second home century followed by seven away from home.

England finally took control, bowling 11.1 overs before tea for 21 runs to Jadeja and Bharat. Jadeja, an old-fashioned spinner, was prepared to wait for the bad ball but didn’t allow Jack Leach to settle by moving out. Bharat started poorly, but after tea, he got the ball too. He missed sweeping a second boundary in a Root over after 10 off 44 to 41 off 81.

Axar ended a sedate day for himself with a four, six, and four off the last three balls. Despite that, India went at under three an over since the wicket of Rahul, but they still added 133 runs for the loss of just two wickets. It meant more mileage on the pitch, more time for it to break, and also more runs in the bank for India. Jadeja ended the day with a century in sight, and his partnership with Axar read 63 in 19.3 overs.
