Rohit Sharma to Captain India in 2024 T20 World Cup, Dravid Stays Coach

Rohit Sharma will be India’s captain at the T20 World Cup for men in 2024. This is what BCCI secretary Jay Shah told the media at an event in Rajkot on Wednesday. He also said that Rahul Dravid will be the team’s head coach until the global tournament.

Rohit will be in charge of India at the T20 World Cup for the second time. He did the same thing in 2022. India lost to England in the semi-finals of that game, which took place in Australia. After that, Rohit didn’t play in any more T20Is, and he didn’t even play in a single one in 2023. But in January 2024, he was called back to lead the attack on Afghanistan.

That move by the selection seemed to mean that Rohit would almost certainly be in charge at the World Cup in June, which will be held in the USA and the West Indies. Shah said the same thing today.

Rohit Sharma’s Return to Lead India

“The fact that he was returning after a year to lead in the Afghanistan series recently meant he was going to [lead in the T20 World Cup],” Shah remarked at a dinner to rename the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot Niranjan Shah Cricket

Under Rohit, India lost last year’s ODI World Cup final at home, and days later Suryakumar Yadav led the T20I team against Australia. After Suryakumar led India in the shortest format in South Africa in December, Mumbai Indians declared that Hardik Pandya would replace Rohit as captain. Rohit returned in January versus Afghanistan. He hit 121 not out after two ducks to become the first guy with five T20I hundreds.

Rohit as captain said By Jay Shah

Rohit Sharma will captain India at the World Cup, but Shah said Hardik, who led India in the shortest format in multiple series in 2023, is the long-term alternative. Shah claimed Hardik’s ODI World Cup injury required Rohit’s short-term recall. For sure, Hardik will skipper T20s.

“Rohit is talented. He showed in the ODI World Cup, where we won 10 straight matches until the final. At the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, Rohit Sharma will lead India to victory.”

Virat Kohli’s Participation in 2024 T20 World Cup Uncertain

India’s selection committee, overseen by former bowler Ajit Agarkar, recalled Virat Kohli for the T20I series against Afghanistan, along with Rohit. Kohli, like Rohit, returned to the format after the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Shah just replied, “We will talk about him [soon].” when asked if Kohli would attend the June showpiece. Kohli had opted out of the first match of the Afghanistan series for personal reasons, but played the final two games, scoring 29 and a duck.

Virat Kohli’s Participation

Kohli has not played since, also skipping the England Test series for personal reasons. Shah said the BCCI will support Kohli but did not elaborate on his absence. “A 15-year employee’s first personal leave request is his right. Virat never asks for leave without a reason. We need to trust our player and back him.”

Dravid Extends Coaching Tenure Until T20 World Cup

After the ODI World Cup final last year, Dravid and other support personnel were asked to continue for the December-January tour to South Africa without a contract. Shah said he spoke with Dravid before deciding to keep him.

After the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rahul Bhai had to go for South Africa immediately. Today, we finally met “Shah stated in Rajkot. “Why are you afraid about a Rahul Dravid contract? T20 World Cup coach Rahul bhai will stay.”

Shah said the BCCI will undertake more conversations before the event. “I will speak with him whenever there is time, there are back-to-back series happening right now,” he remarked. After South Africa, they played Afghanistan and England in T20Is. We didn’t talk in between.”

Will India attend the Champions Trophy in Pakistan?

Shah was also asked if India would play in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February and March. Shah said the Indian government, not the BCCI, should decide.

“India’s position [on traveling to Pakistan] would be based on what the government decides,” stated.

In August–September 2018, the PCB hosted the Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with India playing all their games in Sri Lanka. Pakistan headed to India for the 2023 World Cup. India has not played cricket in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup due to political tensions.
