Public Comments Spark Controversy

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has revealed that public comments by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan exacerbated the rift between him and fellow cricketer Tamim Iqbal. In an interview with Cricbuzz, Hasan stated that the two senior players were not on speaking terms, a revelation that became a major talking point in Bangladesh cricket over the last year.

Shakib Clears the Air

Tamim Iqbal has maintained that his relationship with Shakib did not affect the team, but Shakib had a different perspective. In a documentary aired by Bongo, Shakib shared his views on the controversy. He explained that the issue came into focus after Nazmul Hasan’s comments, which complicated their relationship. “I think some people had the intention to keep it [the rift] in focus and tried to make it the main point of discussion rather than the cricketing side,” Shakib stated.

Shakib also clarified that although their close relationship had diminished over time due to their separate lives and busy schedules, they still communicated as needed on the field. He emphasized that their professional relationship remained unaffected, and there was no need to bridge any perceived distance. “We tried to contribute whether we were talking or not, there was no kind of problem inside the field or in the dressing room,” he said.

Reflections on Past Issues

Shakib also addressed his controversial interview before the World Cup, where he called Tamim irresponsible. He clarified that his intention was to provide transparency to the public about the events leading up to the tournament. Additionally, Shakib reflected on his two-year ban (one year suspended) for failing to report approaches by a bookie. He described his shock upon receiving the ban and acknowledged it as a lesson to take all aspects of life seriously. “It was a lesson for me that you should not take all things in life as a joke,” he remarked.

Shakib concluded by stating that while his legacy might be impacted by the ban, it is up to others to decide its effect. “I learnt a lot from that period,” he admitted, highlighting the importance of his experience.
