Sunil Gavaskar is a former captain of the India National cricketing team. He led his team through several wins and his primary role was the opening batter. He was highly acclaimed for his right-hand batting style which was famed for fielding so much strength and power.

Sunil’s techniques were nothing short of classy and his discipline and professionalism in the sport were unmatched. The Indian cricket team boasted a solid defense during his time due to the solid defense he offered.  His wicket was one of the best in the game.

Sunil Gavaskar Cricketing Career

Sunil’s love for cricket was nurtured by his uncle Madhav Mantri who played the sport. Sunil joined the sport in high school where he won India’s Best School Boy Cricketer of the Year in 1966 at the age of 17. His professional debut came in 1971.

He performed his first test run in this game against West Indies. Sunil led India into breaking international barriers. He scored both a century and a double century in this game. This marked a great beginning for Sunil Gavaskar’s cricketing career. This focus and attention to the game helped him break Don Bradman’s 29 century records. He set 34 century records which stood unbeaten for over two decades.

Commonly referred to as the Little master because of his short stature, Sunil was a name synonymous with global cricketing in the 80s. He was the first cricketer to score 10000 in a test run in march 1987. He achieved this feat while playing against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

Career Sunset Days for The Cricket Legend

Sunil’s cricket career spun almost two decades. He boasted a batting average of 51.12 in a total of 10,122 runs and 125 tests. He is arguably one of the best Indian cricketers of all time. Sunil paved the way for modern-day cricketers and set standards for them to achieve and beat.

True to his love and passion for the game, Sunil Gavaskar pursued a career as a cricket commentator after retirement. His in-depth and accurate analysis of the game has endeared him to many cricket fans of the modern age. He has continued to break barriers even outside the field becoming the first Indian national to speak at the Cowdrey lecture. The cricket legend is in the International Cricket Council’s Hall of fame.

Sunil Gavaskar has won several awards and honors due to his skill and dedication to his craft. From the Padma Bhushan award to Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award. This cricketing legend has carved for himself an unforgettable spot in the cricket world.
