Vijay Shankar

Vijay Shankar, an Indian cricketer who competes for the Tamil Nadu state cricket team, was born on January 26, 1991. He is a right-handed all-rounder who bowls right-arm medium pace and bats right-handed. He represented India in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he made history by becoming the first Indian to take a wicket on his World Cup debut.

Domestic Career

He got two Man of the Match honors while representing Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy knockout round in 2014–15. He scored 111 and 82 against Vidarbha in the quarterfinal, earning him the title of player of the game. Despite the stalemate, Tamil Nadu advanced to the next round thanks to their first-inning advantage. He struck 91 against Maharashtra in the semifinal, picking 2/47 to earn his second man of the match honor. Tamil Nadu advanced to the final thanks to a first-inning advantage in this game, which was again drawn. In the championship game versus Karnataka, he picked 1/92 and scored 5 and 103. Karnataka, however, won by an innings margin to win the championship.

He was included on India C’s roster for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy in October 2018. With seven dismissals in three games, he had the most wickets taken in the competition. He was listed as one of the eight players to watch heading into the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy the following month. He was included in India B’s roster for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019. He served as the team’s captain during Tamil Nadu’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy championship season (2021–2022).

IPL Career and Statistics

He participated in one game for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League in 2014 and four for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017. His best batting performance was a 63-not-out performance on May 13 against the Gujarat Lions.

He was acquired by the Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 IPL auction in January 2018.

In preparation for the 2019 IPL season, he was moved back to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Prior to the 2019 Indian Premier League event, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named him one of the eight players to watch in March 2019. He was purchased by the Gujarat Titans in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League competition in February 2022.

International Career and Statistics

On March 6, 2018, he played his first T20I for India against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy. In his second game, he used the Umpire Decision Review System to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim and record his maiden T20I wicket. He claimed two wickets for 32 runs in the second match of the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, which India won by a score of 6 wickets, earning him the title of player of the match.

He played against Australia in his first ODI on January 18, 2019, at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

He was selected for India’s World Cup roster in April 2019 ahead of seasoned players Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina, which attracted media attention at the time. He was one of the five unexpected selections for the competition, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC) . He became only the third player at a World Cup to take a wicket with his first ball during the match against Pakistan. Then, due to an injury, Shankar was unable to play in India’s remaining two games; Mayank Agarwal was picked as his replacement.
