Williamson Expected to Sit Out the Rest of T20I Series Against Pakistan

Kane Williamson is probably not going to play in the last three games of New Zealand’s T20I series against Pakistan. He left Sunday’s 21-run win in Hamilton because of a leg injury.

It was planned for Williamson to have a scan on Monday, but he flew home to Tauranga instead. In any case, he wasn’t going to play in the third game of the series on Wednesday in Dunedin. He’s very unlikely to play in the last two games, though. NZ is ahead 2-0 in the series and is focusing on their two-Test series against South Africa, which starts on February 3.

Hamstring Injury Raises Doubts

He had to leave the game on Sunday because his right leg hurt after scoring 26 runs off of 15 balls. New Zealand’s coach, Gary Stead, said on Monday morning, “It’s the same leg as where he hurt his knee.” Stead was talking about Williamson’s torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which kept him out for six months last year. She went back to Tauranga with him. Today, he will get a scan.

“I haven’t heard anything else until I know more about the scan this time.” Will Young was already going to join the team for this episode of the show. Kane was not going to join. It seems likely that Will will stay, but we can’t say for sure until we get the scan results from Kane.

Tim Seifert as Replacement

Williamson will likely be replaced by Tim Seifert, who hasn’t played in this series yet. Stead said that Seifert will “probably” take over the gloves from Devon Conway. I think Kane always makes your hitting more stable, so it will be another test without him there.” When Kane leaves, Tim Seifert will probably have a chance to show what he can still do and fill in those shoes for the rest of the series.

Stead also said that Trent Boult, who hasn’t played a T20I since the World Cup semifinals in 2022, will still be a part of New Zealand’s plans for the 2024 tournament in the Caribbean and the US. Boult does not have a central deal and is scheduled to play for Pune-based MI Emirates in the upcoming ILT20.

New Zealand is set to play three T20Is against Australia from February 21–25, right after the ILT20. Stead said it’s not clear if Boult will be able to play. “We’ve tried to meet up a few times but haven’t been able to.” We’ll figure that out later. I don’t know what his plans are at that time yet, so I still need to figure that out.
